Thelma Ouida Owens, 79, of South Bend, Indiana passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on January 4, 2012 at 8:06 p.m. with family by her side. Thelma O. Owens was born in South Bend, Indiana on May 16, 1932 to the union of Albert and Sarah Redding Sr.
Thelma worked at Carlyle Nursing Home as a CNA for more than 30 years, with a certification in Outstanding Workmanship. She retired from Carlyle Nursing Home and then came out of retirement and went to work at Trinity Health Services for several years. She then retired for good in 2008. Her health began to fail at the age of 76 and up until that time she exercised an unquestionable work ethic.
Thelma Owens had a way with houseplants with her green thumb. She loved her plants and at one time she had at least 100 or so. She was very proud of her beautiful plants. She looked forward to planning and attending the family reunions. She was always a permanent fixture and everyone looked for her to be there and couldn’t wait to eat that “fire” potato salad she made.
She leaves to mourn her loss three daughters: Gracie (Robert) Ray of Kennesaw, Georgia, Charmaine (Willie) Lattiker of Gary, Indiana, Bernadette Pearson of South Bend, Indiana; one son, Clifton Pearson Jr. of South Bend; grandchildren: April (Harold) Berry, Ronetta Whitley, Ronald Green Jr., Jeffery Green, LaChanda (Troy) Hicks, Nykia (James) Penson, Tracey Pearson, Regina Pearson, JaVona (Scott) Maniex, Valerie Jones, Rachael (Paul) Haughee, Cedrick Pearson Jr. Anthony Pearson, Angela (Reginald) Yates, Tequilla Pearson, Emmett White Jr. and Tearsa Williams. Surviving sisters and brothers: Margaret Rush, Maudessa Thomas, both of South Bend, Morris (Joyce) Redding of Cassopolis, Michigan, Rudolph (Lucille) Redding of Fayetteville, Georgia, Fred (Mae) Redding of Elkhart, Indiana and Bradford Redding of Delphi, Indiana; 41 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Sarah Redding Sr.; her son, Cedrick J. Pearson; three brothers, Thomas Redding, Wayman Redding and Albert Redding Jr.
Services for Mrs. Thelma Ouida Owens will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012 in Clark-O’Neal Funeral Home Inc., 2702 Lincoln Way West. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and then services at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
