Waudell Newman Sr., age 84, passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 7:30 am.
“Mr. Newman,” as he liked to call himself, was born April 14, 1928 in Union, Arkansas to the union of Henry and Pinkie Newman, both preceding him in death. Waudell Newman accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and saviour at a young age in Arkansas.
Mr. Waudell Newman was joined in holy matrimony to Pinkie Posley in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1947. In 1952 Mr. and Mrs. Newman, along with their first born, relocated to South Bend, Indiana.
As the first African American employed at Clay High School, Mr. Newman retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation in 1990 after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Newman was a self-taught carpenter and plumber who did jobs for a number of people. Mr. Newman was the owner of neighborhood taverns, The Brown Jug and Three Sisters. Mr. Newman was a faithful Deacon for many years at St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. He was well known throughout the community and was a very kind and generous person always welcoming strangers with his gift of striking up a conversation with whomever he met.
Mr. Newman was a soldier for Christ until his earthly death.
Mr. Newman is survived by a sister, Allen Marie Pawlicki of Mishawaka, Indiana; 4 children: Debrah Jennings, Brenda (Jim) Sanders, Glenda Emerson, and Wadell (Felicia) Newman, all of South Bend, Indiana. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren: Marshall Emerson Jr., Joseph Jennings Jr., Craig Williams Jr., Latricia Emerson, Christina Newman, Terrence Newman I, Catrina Newman, Robert Emerson, Marcus Emerson, Ch'Del Newman, Christopher Newman I, Matthew Emerson Sr., and Erich Newman, all of South Bend, Indiana. Mr. Newman was blessed with 25 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Brothers: Nathan Newman, Prelmer Newman, and Eddie Newman; along with sisters: Erma Newman-Murrey and Cora Westley; and one great-grandchild, Alaina Williams, all preceded him in death.

Services for Waudell Newman Sr. will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012, in Clark-O’Neal Funeral Home Inc., 2702 Lincoln Way West. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and service at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
