James Troye Henderson, 88, of South Bend, Indiana, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, departed this life on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in his home. “Troye,” as he was affectionately called, was born on August 13, 1924 to the union of Dennis Henderson and Irene Farley-Henderson in Lima, Ohio. He was the 5th child of 15 children.
He left home at an early age to serve in the US Navy for four years. After being discharged he pursued a formal education at Kentucky State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Also while at Kentucky State, Troye became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Following graduation, he secured employment with Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio. A true citizen of the world, throughout his career, he traveled extensively. Early in his career he acquired a hobby as a Hand Radio Operator using the call sign "N8A WO". He has been a member Amateur Radio Association for over 50 years. His career as an electrical engineer spanned 32 years ending with his retirement in 1982.
He was politically active in his community where he unsuccessfully ran for office in Jefferson Township. Troye truly cared about people and participated in civil rights activities as a life-long member of the local chapter of the NAACP and the Urban League. He was also an active member of Kentucky State Alumni; the Jefferson Township Optimist Club; and the Dayton Alumni Chapter of his beloved Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity where he also served a term as Polemarch. Troye was an active member of Wayman Chapel AME Church for more than 30 yrs where he served as a trustee under Reverend Flanagan. He and his wife, Birta loved people and enjoyed socializing every chance they got. They often entertained in their home and spent countless hours celebrating life with family and friends.
Troye is survived by his son, Jay Corey (Lannette) Henderson; grandchildren: Khiry J. and Khadijah L., both of South Bend, Indiana, who served as his caregiver(s) and with whom he lived in South Bend; godchildren; George Richard Tyler and Rhonda Tyler, both of Trotwood, Ohio; siblings: Robert L. Henderson and Phyllis McGhee, both of Lima, Ohio, Harold L. Henderson of Sacramento, California, E. Leon (Glenda) Henderson and Teresa Stinson, both of Detroit, Michigan; and a large host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Troye was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Irene Henderson; his loving wife, Birta Henderson; brothers: Denny, "T", Elmer, Babe, Fred and Joe; and sisters: Gert, Ocie and Doris.
Funeral services for James Troye Henderson will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 in Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church, 3317 Hoover Avenue, Dayton, Ohio. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Dayton National Cemetery.
